Bilder Jacob Cats (1577–1660) – Emblem of Tears and Simplicity – Engraving (Circa 1632)

Beskrivning
This engraving is a moralistic illustration, or emblem, with the Latin motto "Nuda Movet Lachrimas" (Nakedness/Simplicity moves tears). The circular image depicts a central couple holding hands, possibly celebrating a simple marriage, while the woman holds a stack of onions—a symbol of plain living or tears—and the background shows both a cheerful town scene and a distressed figure (possibly a debtor) near water. The contrasting elements suggest that simplicity (or "naked truth") can sometimes bring genuine emotion (tears), particularly when compared to deceit. The plate originates from Jacob Cats's widely read emblem book, Spiegel van den Ouden en Nieuwen Tydt (Mirror of the Old and New Time).
Jacob Cats was a Dutch poet, diplomat, and statesman, known for his moralistic emblem books which were extraordinarily popular among the Dutch bourgeoisie during the 17th century. His work provided practical advice and ethical instruction, often combining proverbs with detailed allegorical imagery.
