Bilder Theodore de Bry (1528–1598) – Battle Between Conquistadors and Natives in the West Indies – Engraving (Circa 1595)

Beskrivning
This original text and engraving page is titled "Von West Indien" (Concerning the West Indies) in German, and is a detailed illustration of a violent confrontation between European forces and native inhabitants of the Americas. The central image depicts a chaotic battle scene in a forested, hilly landscape near the coast. European soldiers, armed with swords and muskets, are shown attacking and slaughtering indigenous people, some of whom are already lying dead or wounded on the ground. A group of European tents and a standard are visible in the background, contrasting with the dense forest. This graphic print, reflecting contemporary European accounts, is sourced from Theodore de Bry’s influential multi-volume series, Collectiones peregrinationum in Indiam occidentalem (The Great Voyages). The illustration served to depict the conflicts and brutalities inherent in the New World conquest.
Theodore de Bry was a Flemish engraver, goldsmith, and publisher who, along with his sons, produced the highly important illustrated book series known as the Grands Voyages. Though he never traveled to the Americas, his detailed copperplate engravings were crucial in shaping European perceptions of the New World's geography, peoples, and the conflicts of the colonization process.
