Beskrivning

This original text and engraving page is titled "Von West Indien" (Concerning the West Indies) in German, and is a detailed military and ethnographic illustration. The image depicts a dynamic battle and siege scene at an indigenous settlement, likely a fortified town or fort, indicated by the surrounding wooden palisade. European soldiers, armed with muskets and pikes, are shown attacking and engaging in fierce combat with the native inhabitants. The surrounding German text discusses the "Erfindung und Schießarten" (Invention and Artillery), and also references the military conflicts and initial discoveries in the New World. This historical print is sourced from Theodore de Bry’s influential multi-volume series, Collectiones peregrinationum (The Great Voyages or The Lesser Voyages), which documented global exploration and military conflicts.

Theodore de Bry was a Flemish engraver, goldsmith, and publisher who, along with his sons, produced the highly important illustrated book series known as the Grands Voyages. Though he never traveled to the Americas, his detailed copperplate engravings were crucial in shaping European perceptions of the New World's geography, peoples, and the conflicts of the colonization process.
