Bilder Ambroise Tardieu (1788–1841) – Map of the Mouths of the Scheldt (Netherlands) – Engraving (1822)

Beskrivning
This finely engraved nautical and topographical map, titled "Carte des Bouches de l'Escaut" (Map of the Mouths of the Scheldt), depicts the intricate estuarine system where the Scheldt River meets the North Sea in the modern-day Netherlands and Belgium. The map includes the islands of Zeeland and the surrounding mainland, meticulously detailing the waterways, coastal topography, and numerous islands and sandbanks that defined this critical maritime region. The map was engraved by Tardieu, based on the hydrographic work of Beautemps-Beaupré, reflecting the period's need for precise nautical charts. The strategic importance of this area, particularly the approach to the major port of Antwerp (Anvers), ensures its significance as a historical document of early 19th-century hydrography.
Ambroise Tardieu was a prominent French cartographer, engraver, and publisher who worked extensively in Paris during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Trained by his uncle, the leading engraver Pierre Alexandre Tardieu, Ambroise became celebrated for his meticulous copperplate engravings of both maps and portraits. He served as the geographical engraver for the French government and contributed to numerous important atlases, including the Atlas universel de géographie. His work is noted for its high level of detail and accuracy, contributing significantly to the dissemination of geographical knowledge during the Napoleonic and post-Napoleonic eras.
