Beskrivning

This architectural and topographical print is from Lauro’s seminal work, Antiquae Urbis Splendor (The Splendor of the Ancient City). The image depicts the ruined structure of the Circus of Maxentius, situated near the Appian Way outside the walls of Rome. Although historically known as the Circus of Maxentius, it was commonly misattributed to the Emperor Caracalla during the period in which Lauro's work was created. The extensive Latin caption below the image details the dimensions of the circus and points out nearby structures, such as the Tomb of Cecilia Metella, reinforcing the academic and documentation purpose of the print.

Giacomo Lauro was a leading Italian engraver of the Baroque era, primarily known for his detailed and historically important documentation of Roman antiquities, influencing how scholars and travelers viewed the ruins of the ancient city.
