This detailed nautical chart depicts a cluster of South Pacific islands, including Queen Charlotte's Islands, Lord Egmont's Island (Vairaatea), and Carteret's Island (Anuta/Nukutavake), which are part of the Solomon Islands and Santa Cruz Islands. The chart shows the tracks of European exploration, marking Captain Byron's route in the Swallow and providing geographical and navigational data. This print was compiled for the highly influential British publication, An Account of the Voyages, which documented the first major wave of British exploration in the Southern Hemisphere.

John Hawkesworth was an English writer, essayist, and editor who was commissioned by the British Admiralty to compile and publish the official accounts of several major voyages, including those of Commodore Byron, Captain Wallis, Captain Carteret, and Lieutenant James Cook. His massive, three-volume work, An Account of the Voyages, was a major literary and commercial success of the Enlightenment, making him one of the most prominent disseminators of geographical and ethnographic knowledge of the Pacific.
