This work documents the strategic areas encountered by the British expeditions of the late 1760s, notably Captain Philip Carteret's voyage. This chart was published in the highly influential British publication, An Account of the Voyages, which compiled the official journals of Cook, Carteret, and others.

John Hawkesworth was an English writer, essayist, and editor who was commissioned by the British Admiralty to compile and publish the official accounts of several major voyages. His massive, three-volume work, An Account of the Voyages, was a major literary and commercial success of the Enlightenment, making him one of the most prominent disseminators of geographical and ethnographic knowledge of the Pacific.
