Beskrivning

This rare copperplate engraving by Frederick de Wit features anatomical and behavioral studies of hares, combined with a central comparative illustration of a crouching human and ape-like figure in mirrored poses. The composition is divided into three registers: a leaping hare above, the anthropomorphic study at center, and two seated hares below. The work blends natural observation with proto-scientific anatomical inquiry typical of the mid-17th century.

Frederick de Wit (1629–1706) was a leading Dutch engraver, cartographer, and publisher of the Dutch Golden Age. While primarily known for his maps and atlases, he also produced zoological and anatomical engravings notable for their clarity and scientific interest. De Wit’s Amsterdam workshop was instrumental in disseminating illustrated knowledge across Europe during a period of rapid intellectual expansion.
