Beskrivning

This antique print depicts the Single-Horned Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), also known as the Indian Rhinoceros. The massive mammal is shown in profile, highlighting the thick, folded skin that gives the appearance of natural armor, along with its single horn and small ears. This zoological illustration, characteristic of late 18th-century systematic natural history, originated from the Mammalia section of the important multi-volume work, General Zoology, or Systematic Natural History, authored by George Shaw and published in London.

George Shaw was a highly influential English zoologist and botanist, and a co-founder of the Linnean Society of London. He served as the Assistant Keeper and later Keeper of the natural history department at the British Museum. His major scientific writings, including General Zoology and The Naturalist's Miscellany, were instrumental in cataloging and disseminating Linnaean nomenclature and information about global fauna during the transition to modern zoology.
