Bilder Henry Shaw (1800–1873), after Lucas Van Leyden – Saint Agnes – Engraving, Hand-coloured (1843)
Beskrivning
This highly decorative plate, titled Saint Agnes, is an illustration based on a picture by the 16th-century Dutch artist Lucas Van Leyden. The print features the saint in rich, intricately patterned robes of green and crimson against a vibrant gold and red patterned background, emphasizing historical costume and textile detail. Saint Agnes is depicted holding a palm branch, symbolizing martyrdom, and accompanied by a lamb, her traditional emblem. This print is a plate from Henry Shaw's monumental two-volume study, Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages from the Seventh to the Seventeenth Centuries, first published in 1843. The work served as an exhaustive reference for medieval costumes, heraldry, and design.
Henry Shaw was an influential English architect, engraver, and antiquarian, born in 1800. He was renowned for his meticulously researched and elaborately illustrated books on medieval arts, architecture, costume, and ornament, which became important resources for the Gothic Revival movement. His most acclaimed work, Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages, utilized techniques like chromolithography and hand-colouring combined with gold heightening to produce plates of exceptional quality. Shaw's detailed reproductions of historical garments and decorative elements made him a leading figure in 19th-century antiquarian publishing until his death in 1873.
