Beskrivning
This highly detailed plate, titled Christine de Pisan, Presenting her Book to the Queen of France, illustrates a historical manuscript illumination from the early 15th century. The scene depicts the renowned medieval author Christine de Pisan kneeling in a richly decorated chamber to offer her work to the Queen of France, Isabelle of Bavaria, who is seated among her ladies. The illustration, marked "Date about 1400," is notable for its vibrant colour palette, meticulous rendering of the period's textiles and furnishings, and the distinctive horned headdresses (escoffions) worn by the ladies, providing an accurate record of late medieval court dress and decoration. This print is a plate from Henry Shaw's important antiquarian study, Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages from the Seventh to the Seventeenth Centuries.
Henry Shaw was an influential English architect, engraver, and antiquarian. His major publication, Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages (1843), was an ambitious and critically acclaimed work that documented medieval costume, architecture, and ornamental art with scrupulous fidelity. Shaw utilized fine printing techniques, often combining engraving with extensive hand-colouring and gold heightening, to create high-quality reproductions that profoundly influenced the 19th-century Gothic Revival movement.
