Bilder Henry Shaw (1800–1873) – Shooting at the Butt – Engraving, Hand-coloured (Circa 1843)
Beskrivning
This colourful print, titled Shooting at the Butt, depicts a scene of medieval archery practice, an illustration taken from a manuscript dated around 1460. The image shows figures engaged in target practice with bows and arrows near an elevated, brick-lined butt, while in the foreground, a man rides a horse that pulls a small cart laden with sacks. The setting is a wooded, hilly landscape, and the figures are dressed in the distinctive costumes of the mid-15th century. This plate is an illustration from Henry Shaw's extensive study on medieval life and attire.
Henry Shaw was an influential English engraver, architect, and antiquarian who dedicated his career to documenting medieval decorative arts and historical costume. His definitive work, Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages from the Seventh to the Seventeenth Centuries (first published 1843), meticulously compiled hundreds of images copied from illuminated manuscripts and other historical sources. Shaw personally supervised the execution of the plates, using techniques such as engraving and detailed hand-colouring to create highly accurate and visually rich reproductions for the Gothic Revival movement.
