Bilder Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) – Map of Mozambique - the Bay of Mozambique (Carte de la Baye de Mosambique) – Engraving (Circa 1748)
Beskrivning
This detailed nautical map depicts the Bay of Mozambique, located on the eastern coast of Africa, showing the mainland coastline and the key islands of Mozambique and St. George. The map is highly focused on navigational detail, including soundings in the bay, coastal features, and notes on the limited accessibility for vessels in certain areas. It includes a compass rose and is marked with a scale in French nautical leagues. The print is a plate from the comprehensive French travel compilation, Histoire Générale des Voyages (General History of Travels). The map was based on the most current French marine charts and earlier Portuguese records.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a preeminent French cartographer and geographer of the 18th century, serving as the official Hydrographer to the French Navy. His lengthy career produced hundreds of precise and functional nautical charts and maps, which set the standard for European cartography during the Enlightenment. Bellin was a key contributor to the plates for the Abbé Prévost's massive work, Histoire Générale des Voyages, which systematically documented global geography and exploration from its initial publication in 1746 onward. Bellin died in 1772.
