Beskrivning
This essential nautical chart depicts the main islands of the Comoros Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, located between Africa and Madagascar. The map individually labels the major islands using their historical names: Isle Comore (Grande Comore), Iohanna ou Anxouan (Anjouan), Isle de Moaly ou Mohilla (Mohéli), and Isle Mayotte (Mayotte). The detailed depiction includes navigational lines, depth markings, coastal features, and an ornamental cartouche, highlighting the islands' strategic importance as stopping points on the maritime routes to India and the East.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was the most influential French cartographer of the 18th century, serving as the official Hydrographer to the French Navy. His maps were renowned for their precision and functional style, reflecting the Enlightenment's commitment to objective science. This map is a plate created by Bellin for the massive travel and geography encyclopedia, Histoire Générale des Voyages, edited by Abbé Antoine François Prévost, which systematically documented the world's coastal and global regions from 1746 onward.
