Bilder Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) – Map of Grand Tibet / Carte du Grand Thibet – Map (1749)
Beskrivning
This historical geographical map depicts the extensive region of Grand Tibet, along with surrounding areas of Central Asia, including Kashghar and Grande Bucharie (Bukhara). The map details the complex network of rivers, mountains, and numerous cities and settlements across the region, with particular attention paid to the large Gobi Desert and the eastern extent of the area known as "Petit Thibet." This map was drawn by the Chief Engineer of the French Navy in 1749 and was explicitly created to accompany the comprehensive travel narratives of the time.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was the most influential French cartographer of the 18th century, holding the official post of Hydrographer to the French Navy. His lengthy career produced an enormous volume of precise and functionally designed maps. This map is a plate created by Bellin for the massive travel and geography encyclopedia, Histoire Générale des Voyages, edited by Abbé Antoine François Prévost, which systematically documented the world's coastal and interior regions from 1746 onward.
