This historical bird's-eye view city plan depicts the fortified city and island of Ormuz (Hormuz) in the Strait of Hormuz (also labeled Ile de Ieron or Gerun). The map showcases the heavily defended Portuguese fortresses and buildings positioned on the island, with numerous sailing ships surrounding the strategic maritime hub. The accompanying key identifies the main coastal features and defensive works. The location, situated at the entrance to the Persian Gulf, is noted for its immense historical importance as a major center for world trade in spices, silks, and pearls.

This print is  a plate from the colossal historical and geographical work, Histoire Générale des Voyages, a multi-volume encyclopedia edited by Antoine-François Prévost d'Exiles (Abbé Prévost). The work systematically compiled travel narratives and precise geographical and military plans from around the globe, providing essential documentation for European commercial and strategic interests.
