Bilder Carlo Pellegrini (1839–1889) – The Bishop of Peterborough (Dr. William Connor Magee) – Chromolithograph (1869)
Beskrivning
This prominent caricature depicts William Connor Magee (1821–1891), the Anglican Bishop of Peterborough, a famous Irish orator and political figure known for his defense of the Irish Church against disestablishment in 1869. The Bishop is shown wearing clerical robes with voluminous white sleeves, bald on top, and gesturing emphatically, a pose that captures his reputation for powerful eloquence. The title quotes a wry political commentary on the Irish Church Bill of 1869: "If eloquence could justify injustice he would have saved the Irish Church."
This is a political and social caricature published in the British weekly magazine Vanity Fair on July 3, 1869, as "Statesmen No. 22." The work was created by the magazine’s most famous caricaturist, Carlo Pellegrini, who signed his work with the pseudonym "Ape". Pellegrini's elegant and satirical chromolithographs were the defining feature of the magazine during the Victorian era.
