Beskrivning

This Offset print of a famous political caricature from the British magazine Vanity Fair. The portrait depicts Samuel Wilberforce (1805–1873), the Bishop of Oxford, in a commanding, stylized pose, wearing voluminous clerical robes. The caption, "Not a brawler." is ironic, referencing the Bishop's reputation for eloquent yet contentious debate within the Church of England. The original chromolithograph was published in 1869.

Carlo Pellegrini, who signed his work as "Ape," was an Italian caricaturist who co-founded the magazine Vanity Fair and was its principal artist from 1869 to 1889. His brightly colored, full-length caricatures of leading figures in British society, politics, and the church were highly popular and defined the magazine's visual identity.
