Beskrivning

This copperplate engraving is a detailed topographical map depicting the regions of Southern Mexico and Central America, specifically the provinces of Tabasco, Chiapas, Verapaz, Guatimala (Guatemala), Honduras, and Yucatan. The map covers the entire Yucatan Peninsula, the Gulf of Mexico coastline, the Bay of Campeche, and extends south to cover key portions of present-day Guatemala and Honduras. It is notable for its clear depiction of colonial administrative boundaries, coastal details, rivers, and internal geography, illustrating the political and geographical knowledge of the region during the mid-18th century. It was published in Paris, as a plate for the influential travel compilation, Histoire Générale des Voyages by Abbé Prévost.

Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a preeminent French cartographer and geographer of the 18th century, with a career spanning nearly five decades. Appointed Hydrographer to the French Navy at the age of eighteen, he later became the first Ingénieur de la Marine and Official Hydrographer to the King in 1741, playing a vital role in the creation of the Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine. His commitment to accuracy and function over decoration resulted in a prodigious output of highly respected nautical charts and maps, including his major works, the Neptune Francois and the five-volume Petit Atlas Maritime (1764). His work set a high standard for European cartography and was widely copied by his contemporaries.
