Bilder Louis Auguste de Sainson (1800–1874) – Redoubt River – Lithograph (Circa 1833)
Beskrivning
This lithograph depicts a picturesque scene of the Rivière de Redoute (Redoubt River), most on the island of Guam in the Mariana Islands, a stop made during the Astrolabe expedition. The composition features a lush, forested riverbank, a small man-made waterfall, and a rudimentary wooden water structure, possibly for a mill or diversion. A small white building is visible in the background, contrasting with the dark foliage. In the foreground, figures in local dress are resting on the rocks by the river. The image, designated Plate 44, comes from the Album Historique which documented the French scientific and exploratory voyage of the corvette L’Astrolabe, commanded by Jules Dumont d'Urville (1826–1829).
Louis Auguste de Sainson was a French draftsman and painter who served as the official artist on Jules Dumont d'Urville's famed circumnavigation aboard L'Astrolabe. His work during this 1826–1829 expedition provided a crucial visual record of the landscapes, natural history, and indigenous peoples of the Pacific, Australia, and Asia. His meticulously detailed field sketches were later developed into the lithographic plates that formed the extensive and influential Atlas Historique for the voyage's official published account.
