Bilder Louis Auguste de Sainson (1800–1874) – General View at Sanyalang (Timor) – Lithograph (Circa 1833)
Beskrivning
This lithograph, titled General View at Sanyalang, depicts an open-air pavilion or meeting structure, near Coupang on the island of Timor (Indonesia). The large, pitched, thatched roof of the structure is supported by columns and provides shade for a gathering of figures. The scene captures a moment of local life, showing figures grouped around and within the structure. The surrounding area is populated with trees and other smaller buildings. The print is Plate 42 from the Album Historique that accompanied the official account of Jules Dumont d'Urville's expedition aboard the corvette L'Astrolabe (1826–1829).
Louis Auguste de Sainson was a French naval draftsman and official artist for the L'Astrolabe expedition, during which he circumnavigated the globe, documenting the remote locations visited. His field sketches provided a comprehensive visual survey of the Pacific, Australia, and parts of Asia, which were subsequently adapted into the detailed and highly valued lithographic plates published in the expedition's multi-volume Atlas Historique (1833).
