This copperplate engraving is a navigational chart titled Chart of the Southern Extremity of America. It provides a detailed hydrographic and topographical survey of the southern tip of South America, specifically encompassing the Strait of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego, and the Falkland Islands. The chart includes soundings (depth measurements) and coastal detail derived from the explorations of Captain Cook and previous navigators. The inset map in the lower right corner shows Part of Staten Island. This map was published in the atlas volume accompanying the official account of Captain Cook's second voyage, A Voyage towards the South Pole, and Round the World (1777).
James Cook was a British naval officer, explorer, and cartographer who led three voyages of discovery to the Pacific. He is renowned for his meticulous surveying and mapping, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere, which fundamentally changed European geographical knowledge. Cook was killed in Hawaii during his third voyage in 1779.
