Bilder James Cook (1728–1779) – Map of Pacific region - Chart of Discoveries Made in the South Pacific Ocean, His Majesty's Ship Resolution, 1774 – Copperplate Engraving (1777)
Beskrivning
This copperplate engraving is a significant navigational chart, titled Chart of Discoveries made in the South Pacific Ocean... Captain Cook, 1774. The map centers on the tracks and coastal surveys of Cook's ship, HMS Resolution, primarily charting the newly explored islands of New Caledonia and the New Hebrides (Vanuatu). The detailed outline surveys include names given by Cook, such as the Island of Pines (New Caledonia). The chart confirms Cook’s work in the South Pacific during the 1774 leg of his second voyage. It was published in the atlas accompanying the official account, A Voyage towards the South Pole, and Round the World (1777).
James Cook was a British naval officer, explorer, and cartographer who led three voyages of discovery. The Second Voyage (1772–1775) aimed to settle the question of the supposed southern continent, and Cook's charts, such as this one, systematically documented his discoveries, cementing his reputation as the most accurate maritime surveyor of his era.
