Bilder Sebastiano Serlio (1475–1554) – Architectural Study of an Amphitheater Arcade (from Antiquitatum) – Woodcut (Circa 1540–1600)
Beskrivning
This print is an architectural diagram detailing the elevation of a Roman arcade structure, specifically the exterior wall of an amphitheater, most the Colosseum in Rome, Italy. The engraving, which appears on page 212 of a volume titled ANTIQUITATUM (Of Antiquities) in the running header, illustrates two distinct levels of classical orders. This technical illustration was intended to accompany text on Roman architectural practice, providing a canonical example of superimposed classical orders.
Sebastiano Serlio was a highly influential Italian Mannerist architect and theorist, celebrated for his comprehensive treatise on architecture, I sette libri dell'architettura (Seven Books of Architecture). Published across Europe in piecemeal fashion starting in 1537, his work pioneered the use of detailed woodcut illustrations to clarify the five classical orders and illustrate ancient Roman monuments. Serlio's treatise served as the primary practical handbook for architects and builders across Europe, spreading Renaissance design principles throughout the 16th and 17th centuries.
