Beskrivning
This print is a detailed natural history illustration depicting three species of fish, marine species from the Mediterranean Sea or Indo-Pacific Ocean. The illustrations meticulously detail the spiny fins, large eyes, and distinct scale patterns of these teleost fish.
Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon was a renowned French naturalist and author of the colossal Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière. The volume containing this print belongs to the later continuation of the work by Bernard Germain de Lacépède (1756–1825), which covered fishes and other groups. Lacépède's volumes, published in Paris by Plassan between 1798 and 1803, were an encyclopedic effort to document the world's ichthyology with systematic descriptions and detailed engravings.
