This topographical work is an engraved chart New Map of the Caroline Islands. The map depicts the scattering of the Caroline Islands (in the western Pacific Ocean, Micronesia) and includes a grid of latitude and longitude, as well as the names of many individual islands and island groups. The map focuses on geographic detail, incorporating the tracks of early European navigators, as indicated by the dotted lines crossing the sea. The title is presented within a decorative, rococo-style cartouche. This print was published as Plate Number 10 in the supplemental section for Volume 10 of Abbé Prévost's travel compilation, Histoire Générale des Voyages.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a French hydrographer, geographer, and member of the Académie de Marine, who served as the Official Hydrographer to the French King. He was one of the most important and prolific cartographers of the 18th century, known for his accuracy and high standards of workmanship. He contributed a substantial number of maps and charts to the monumental Histoire Générale des Voyages by Antoine François Prévost, providing an illustrated geographic record of the world.
