This topographical work is an engraved Map of the Coast of Arabia, Red Sea, and Persian Gulf. The map provides detailed coastal charting of the entire Red Sea (Mer Rouge) and the Arabian Peninsula, including the Persian Gulf (Golfe de Persse), with numerous place names, mountains, and sandbanks noted. The interior of the Arabian Peninsula is mostly blank, focusing on the maritime and coastal regions.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a French hydrographer and geographer who served as the Official Hydrographer to the French King and was a key member of the Académie de Marine. He was one of the foremost cartographers of the 18th century, known for his commitment to accuracy and for producing vast numbers of high-quality charts and maps. This map was created for use in Jean-François de La Harpe's abridged edition of Antoine François Prévost's monumental Histoire Générale des Voyages, or the Dutch expanded edition, solidifying his role in disseminating global geography.
