This topographical work is an engraved combination of a coastal view and a detailed map, focused on the Isle de Juan Fernandes (Juan Fernández Island), now officially known as Robinson Crusoe Island, off the coast of Chile.The map includes navigational details, depth soundings, place names like Isle aux Chèvres (Goat Island), and a compass rose. The plate was sourced from the narratives of Admiral Anson's voyage, and the inscription Tome 20. in 8. Number 36 indicates its placement in the Histoire Générale des Voyages by Abbé Prévost.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a French hydrographer and geographer who held the distinguished position of Official Hydrographer to the French King. He was celebrated for his immense output of precise charts and maps that were published in major naval and scholarly works throughout the 18th century, including the numerous volumes of the Histoire Générale des Voyages. His maps were highly influential and provided a detailed geographical foundation for the age of exploration and trade.
