Bilder Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) – Map of The Provinces of Tierra Firme, Darien, Cartagena, and New Granada – Engraving (circa 1756)
Beskrivning
This topographical work is an engraved Map of the Provinces of Tierra Firme, Darien, Cartagena, and New Granada. The map covers the strategic Isthmus of Panama, the northern coast of South America, and the interior regions that roughly correspond to present-day Panama, Colombia, and parts of Venezuela. The title cartouche notes that it was drawn from the best maps, particularly the map of America by D'Anville, and that it was made to accompany a historical work. It depicts colonial administrative divisions, numerous settlements, rivers, and mountain ranges. This map was published in the Histoire Générale des Voyages by Antoine François Prévost or a subsequent Bellin work like Le Petit Atlas Maritime.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a French hydrographer and geographer who served as the Official Hydrographer to the French King. He was celebrated for his prodigious output of precise charts and maps that were essential for naval and commercial purposes during the 18th century. His works, including those for the Histoire Générale des Voyages, were widely distributed and helped disseminate current geographical knowledge of the world.
