This topographical work is an engravedPlan of the City and Cite of San Francisco de Quito. The map details the urban grid layout of the city of Quito, Ecuador, the capital of the former Spanish province of Quito, situated in a valley between mountainous peaks. The surrounding topography is shown pictorially, with specific features like volcanoes illustrated. The title cartouche notes that the map was compiled from the voyage accounts of Don Jorge Juan and Don Antoine de Ulloa and other reliable sources. An extensive key, listing nearly fifty numbered and lettered locations, identifies major churches, plazas, monasteries, and civic buildings within the city.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was a French hydrographer and geographer who served as the Official Hydrographer to the French King. He was known for his dedication to cartographic precision and produced a vast number of detailed maps and charts for the French Navy and for scholarly compendiums. This map was created for or published in the monumental Histoire Générale des Voyages by Antoine François Prévost, disseminating current geographical and urban information on the Spanish colonies in South America.
