This engraving is a detailed map of the Island of Celebes, now Sulawesi in Indonesia, also referred to as Macassar. It illustrates the various kingdoms and regions of the island, Mandar, Lingoero, and the Kingdom of Bouton. The map was created for Volume 10 of the monumental 18th-century travel collection, Histoire Générale des Voyages.
Antoine François Prévost, commonly known as Abbé Prévost, was a French author and historian. While famous for his novel Manon Lescaut, he is also renowned for compiling and editing the massive multi-volume work Histoire Générale des Voyages, which documented global exploration and was celebrated for its detailed maps and illustrations.
