This engraving is a historical map of the Lake of Mexico, depicting the region at the time of the Spanish conquest. It shows the interconnected system of lakes, including the "Lac de Mexico" and "Lac de Chalco," and identifies key Aztec cities Mexico (Tenochtitlan), Tescuco, and Tacuba. The map was published in Volume 13 of the monumental 18th-century travel collection, Histoire Générale des Voyages.
Antoine François Prévost, commonly known as Abbé Prévost, was a French author and historian. While famous for his novel Manon Lescaut, he is also renowned for compiling and editing the massive multi-volume work Histoire Générale des Voyages, which documented global exploration and was celebrated for its detailed maps and illustrations.
