This engraving is a detailed map of the Molucca Islands (Maluku Islands) in Indonesia. It charts the coastline of the "Isle de Gilolo" (Halmahera) and the adjacent islands of Ternate, Tidor, Machian, and Bachian, noting the path of the equator. The map was published in Volume 8 of the monumental 18th-century travel collection, Histoire Générale des Voyages.
Antoine François Prévost, commonly known as Abbé Prévost, was a French author and historian. While famous for his novel Manon Lescaut, he is also renowned for compiling and editing the massive multi-volume work Histoire Générale des Voyages, which documented global exploration and was celebrated for its detailed maps and illustrations.
