This engraving is a map detailing the Bering Strait region, showing the eastern part of Siberia (Tschoktschi, Kamtschatka) and the western coast of Alaska ("Country of Klots-Koi"). It illustrates the route of the Second Kamchatka Expedition, as noted in the decorative cartouche. The map was published in Volume 11 of the monumental 18th-century travel collection, Histoire Générale des Voyages.
Antoine François Prévost, commonly known as Abbé Prévost, was a French author and historian. While famous for his novel Manon Lescaut, he is also renowned for compiling and editing the massive multi-volume work Histoire Générale des Voyages, which documented global exploration and was celebrated for its detailed maps and illustrations.
