This engraving is a detailed map of a large portion of South America, including Brazil, Paraguay, and the Rio de la Plata region. The map charts the coast from Trinidad down to Patagonia and illustrates major river systems. A decorative cartouche in the lower right depicts indigenous people and illustrates the inland expeditions of P. de Careres and Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca. This map was published in the Naaukeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste zee en landreysen.
Pieter van der Aa was a Dutch publisher, bookseller, and engraver in Leiden, active in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He was renowned for producing vast collections of travel narratives, atlases, and maps, including the monumental Galerie Agréable du Monde. His works are noted for their decorative cartouches and compilation of contemporary exploration knowledge.
