This engraving is a detailed map of the island of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and the extensive chain of the Maldive Islands. It charts the "Golfe de Bengala" (Bay of Bengal) and the "Mar di India" (Indian Ocean), with a decorative cartouche in the lower right. This map was published in Volume 8 of the Naaukeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste zee en landreysen.

Pieter van der Aa was a Dutch publisher, bookseller, and engraver in Leiden, active in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He was renowned for producing vast collections of travel narratives, atlases, and maps, including the monumental Galerie Agréable du Monde. His works are noted for their decorative cartouches and compilation of contemporary exploration knowledge.
