Bilder John Hawkesworth (1715–1773) – Map of Discoveries in New Britain and New Guinea (Papua New Guinea) – Engraving (1774)
Beskrivning
This engraving is a nautical chart detailing the discoveries made along the coasts of New Guinea and New Britain (now part of Papua New Guinea). It specifically charts the passage of Captain Philip Carteret (1767) and Louis de Bougainville (1768), including the Dampier Strait and St. George's Channel. The map was published to accompany the 1774 French edition of Hawkesworth's atlas, Relation des voyages.
John Hawkesworth was an English writer and editor. He was commissioned by the Admiralty to compile and edit the official account of Captain Cook's first voyage, along with the voyages of Byron, Wallis, and Carteret. This work, An Account of the Voyages... in the Southern Hemisphere (1773), became a bestseller and was quickly translated, including this 1774 French edition.
