Bilder John Hawkesworth (1715–1773) – A Chart of Hawkins's Maidenland (Falkland Islands) and Falkland Sound – Engraving (1774)
Beskrivning
This engraving is a nautical chart of the Falkland Islands, referred to by its 16th-century name, "Hawkins's Maidenland," as discovered by Sir Richard Hawkins. The title notes that the chart was based on a manuscript from Sir Walter Raleigh's habitation, corrected in 1689. The map was published to accompany the 1774 French edition of Hawkesworth's atlas, Relation des voyages.
John Hawkesworth was an English writer and editor. He was commissioned by the Admiralty to compile and edit the official account of Captain Cook's first voyage, along with the voyages of Byron, Wallis, and Carteret. This work, An Account of the Voyages... in the Southern Hemisphere (1773), became a bestseller and was quickly translated, including this 1774 French edition.
