This large folio engraving serves as the elaborate allegorical frontispiece to John Miller's influential work, An Illustration of the Sexual System of Linnaeus (Illustratio Systematis Sexualis Linnaei). The composition features medallion portraits of Carl Linnaeus and the author, John Miller, supported by allegorical figures. Below, a central scene depicts figures representing the male and female aspects of plants, illustrating Linnaeus's classification system based on plant sexual characteristics. Figures representing science and nature flank a Latin inscription.
John Miller, originally Johann Sebastian Müller, was a German-born engraver and botanist who moved to England. He gained prominence for his detailed and large-scale botanical illustrations. His most celebrated work, An Illustration of the Sexual System of Linnaeus, published between 1770 and 1777, was highly praised for its artistic merit and its role in popularizing Linnaean taxonomy in Britain.
