This hand-coloured engraved map depicts the continent of Africa based on the observations of the French Royal Academy of Sciences. It details the various kingdoms and regions known to Europeans in the mid-18th century, including Barbary, Egypt, Guinea, Congo, Abyssinia, and Monomotapa, along with major rivers like the Nile and Niger. The map features outline colour differentiating regions and includes Madagascar and surrounding islands. It was published in Le Rouge's Atlas Nouveau Portatif.
Georges-Louis Le Rouge was a prominent French cartographer, engraver, and publisher based in Paris. Active in the mid-18th century, he held the title of "Ingénieur Géographe du Roi" (Geographical Engineer to the King). He is known for producing numerous atlases, individual maps, and plans covering various parts of the world, noted for their detail and decorative elements like the elephant cartouche seen here.
