Beskrivning
This hand-coloured engraving illustrates various historical models of the solar system alongside a central depiction of an armillary sphere. The plate presents diagrams and textual explanations of the Copernican (heliocentric), Ptolemaic (geocentric), Tychonic (geo-heliocentric), and a Composite system, providing a comparative view of astronomical theories prevalent in the 18th century. The print originates from a French encyclopedic atlas, such as Bonne's Atlas Moderne.
Rigobert Bonne was a prominent French mathematician, engineer, and cartographer who succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin as the Royal Hydrographer at the French Depôt de la Marine. He was known for his precise and detailed maps, contributing significantly to works like the Atlas Moderne and Guillaume Raynal's Histoire philosophique et politique des établissements et du commerce des Européens dans les deux Indes.
