This engraving, titled "Les Noces de Pelée" (The Wedding of Peleus), depicts the marriage feast of the mortal hero Peleus and the sea nymph Thetis, parents of Achilles. The scene is framed by an arch and shows the assembled gods and nymphs feasting, while the goddess Discord (Eris) casts the Golden Apple of Discord from above. The plate is from the monumental antiquarian work, Recueil de Peintures Antiques, which documents classical artworks and Roman murals.

Pietro Santi Bartoli was an Italian engraver, antiquarian, and painter. He is renowned for his detailed engravings that documented and preserved the imagery of classical antiquity, particularly the frescoes and wall paintings found in Roman ruins, including the "Domus Aurea" of Nero. His precise and prolific work made the visual culture of ancient Rome accessible to European scholars and artists during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
