Bilder Jan Goeree (1670–1731) – Map of the Roman Campagna (Latium Vetus et Novum) with Allegorical Figures (Italy) – Engraving (Circa 1694-1699)
Beskrivning
This engraving features a detailed map of the ancient Roman Campagna, the region surrounding Rome ("Agro Romano" or Latium Vetus et Novum). The map, presented as if mounted on a wall, shows the Tiber River, Rome, surrounding towns, roads, and geographical features. Below the map, an allegorical scene unfolds: putti support a large inscribed tablet bearing the map's title, alongside cartographic tools, while a seated female figure (perhaps representing Rome or Abundantia) looks on. The plate served as an illustration for Johann Georg Graevius's monumental collection, Thesaurus Antiquitatum Romanarum.
Jan Goeree was a Dutch draughtsman, engraver, and poet active in Amsterdam. He was highly regarded for his skill in creating illustrations for historical, topographical, and antiquarian publications. His work significantly contributed to important scholarly compilations of the period, including Graevius's extensive Thesaurus, providing detailed visual representations of classical geography, architecture, ruins, and artifacts.
