This large folio engraving features a detailed map showing part of Latium, the region surrounding ancient Rome ("Pars Latii a Roma"), based on the descriptions of Abraham Ortelius. The map details the topography, rivers, towns, and roads like the Via Appia and Via Latina. Below the map, an allegorical scene depicts putti engaged in the study of antiquity, examining architectural drawings, plans, and artifacts. The plate served as an illustration for Johann Georg Graevius's monumental collection, Thesaurus Antiquitatum Romanarum.
Jan Goeree was a Dutch draughtsman, engraver, and poet active in Amsterdam. He was highly regarded for his skill in creating illustrations for historical, topographical, and antiquarian publications. His work significantly contributed to important scholarly compilations of the period, including Graevius's extensive Thesaurus, providing detailed visual representations of classical geography, architecture, ruins, and artifacts.
