Beskrivning

This engraving, originally published as a book illustration (page 309), features a historical map of Northwestern Europe. It details the regions bordering the Mare Germanicum (North Sea), including parts of Britain, Francia, Germania, and Scandinavia, illustrating the broader geographical context relevant to the history of Flanders. The plate includes Dutch text and a list of locations below the map. It was published as part of Vredius's historical studies on the region.

Olivarius Vredius (Olivier de Wree) was a Flemish historian, poet, genealogist, and politician from Bruges. He served in the city administration and is best known for his scholarly works on the history and seals of the Counts of Flanders, notably Sigilla Comitum Flandriae (1639) and Genealogia Comitum Flandriae (1642-43), which were often illustrated with maps and engravings based on his research.
