This woodcut presents an architectural elevation and partial section of the Pantheon in Rome, labelled "TEMPLI" (Temple). The illustration, titled "Panthei Exterior Species," details the classical portico, the massive rotunda with its stepped dome, and key structural elements, offering a Renaissance interpretation and analysis of the iconic ancient Roman structure. This plate is from Book III of Serlio's influential architectural treatise, Tutte l'opere d'architettura et prospetiva, which focused on ancient buildings.

Sebastiano Serlio was an Italian Mannerist architect, painter, and architectural theorist. Born in Bologna, he worked in Rome, Venice, and notably in France at the court of Francis I at Fontainebleau. His major contribution was his architectural treatise, published in several books from 1537 onwards, which became a primary source for understanding classical orders and Renaissance design, significantly influencing architectural practice across Europe through its practical advice and numerous woodcut illustrations.
