Bilder Sebastiano Serlio (1475–1554) – The Comic Scene (Stage Set Design) – Woodcut (Circa 1545-1600)
Beskrivning
This woodcut, titled "De Scena Comica," illustrates an idealized stage set design for a comedy according to classical principles, contrasting with his design for tragedy. Employing linear perspective, it depicts a receding street lined with a mix of more common architectural styles, including Gothic and domestic elements, deemed suitable for comedic themes. This plate is from Book II (on Perspective) of Serlio's highly influential multi-volume treatise on architecture, Tutte l'opere d'architettura et prospetiva.
Sebastiano Serlio was an Italian Mannerist architect, painter, and architectural theorist. Born in Bologna, he worked in Rome, Venice, and notably in France at the court of Francis I at Fontainebleau. His major contribution was his architectural treatise, published in several books from 1537 onwards. This work, renowned for its practical advice and numerous woodcut illustrations covering classical orders, perspective, and stage design, became a primary source for Renaissance design and significantly influenced architectural and theatrical practice across Europe.
