This woodcut illustrates a demonic figure, often referred to as a "Teufel" (Devil), depicted standing in a landscape holding a vessel. The print is featured on page 313 of Sebastian Münster's Cosmographia, one of the most comprehensive and influential geographical and cultural encyclopedias of the 16th century, containing numerous maps and illustrations describing the known world and its inhabitants, both real and legendary.
Sebastian Münster was a German cartographer, cosmographer, and Christian Hebraist scholar. His Cosmographia (first published in 1544) was one of the most successful and widely read books of the 16th century, going through numerous editions in various languages. He was influential in reviving geography in Germany and known for his detailed maps and encyclopedic descriptions of the world.
