This detailed woodcut provides a bird's-eye view map of the city of Basel, Switzerland, bisected by the Rhine River. The view clearly distinguishes Grossbasel (Greater Basel) and Kleinbasel (Lesser Basel), connected by the Mittlere Brücke (Middle Bridge). It includes a numbered key identifying significant locations within both parts of the city. This map was published in Sebastian Münster's monumental 16th-century work, Cosmographia.

Sebastian Münster was a German cartographer, cosmographer, and Christian Hebraist scholar. His Cosmographia (first published in 1544) was one of the most successful and widely read books of the 16th century, going through numerous editions in various languages. He was influential in reviving geography in Germany and known for his detailed maps, city views, and encyclopedic descriptions of the world.
