Beskrivning
This large woodcut provides a detailed bird's-eye topographical view of the city of Sion (Sitten in German), the capital of the canton of Valais in Switzerland. The view prominently features the city nestled in the Rhône valley, dominated by the two fortified hills: Valère, crowned by the Basilica of Valeria, and Tourbillon, topped by the ruins of the Bishop's castle. The print details the city walls, major buildings, and the surrounding mountainous landscape. This view was published in Sebastian Münster's monumental 16th-century work, Cosmographia.
